Playing football at the beach in Rio

More than a country. A way of living.

When we started Mati, we wanted to understand where yerba mate truly comes from. Not just the plant itself, but the culture around it. So we travelled to Brazil. We visited the factory where our mate is produced, walked through the fields where it is grown, and spoke with the people who have worked with this plant for generations. But what stayed with us most was not only what we learned about yerba mate. It was the way people live.

A Different Rhythm

Brazil moves to a different rhythm. There is music everywhere: on the streets, in cafés, at the beach, and in people’s homes. Samba and other Brazilian rhythms are deeply rooted in the country’s history and are woven into daily life, shaping the way people gather, celebrate, and express themselves. Life feels less rushed. Conversations last longer. People make time for each other. Even in the busiest cities, there is a sense of presence. A feeling that life is meant to be experienced, not just scheduled.

Warmth and Connection

One of the biggest differences we noticed was how collective everything felt. In Europe, life can often feel individual and fast-paced. In Brazil, there is a stronger sense of togetherness. People share food, music, stories, and time. Yerba mate fits naturally into that culture. Traditionally, mate is passed from person to person and shared as part of everyday life. The ritual is simple, but it represents something powerful: connection.

The Story Behind Mati

This trip changed how we thought about the drink we were creating. We realized that mate is more than a source of caffeine. It carries a culture of warmth, rhythm, and connection. That is what we wanted to bring back with Mati. Not just the leaves, but the feeling behind them. Born in Brazil. Brewed in Amsterdam.

A Ritual Worth Sharing

Mati was created to capture a small part of what we experienced in Brazil. The collective spirit. The natural energy. The slower, more connected rhythm of life. Because in the end, the real power of mate is not only in what it does for you. It is in the moments it creates.
